www.classicphotos.com
Age Group: Level 4
Characters:
- Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin Man from the The Wizard of Oz some time after Dorothy left them.
- Snail.
Synopsis: The three characters are again on
their way to Oz to ask the wizard to take away their wishes. Only Lion is not
totally convinced.
Scene I:
They are sitting under a tree by the
yellow-brick road and the three of them look worried and somehow older. The three discuss how
different their lives were before they met Dorothy and they all went to Oz to
ask the wizard to grant them their wishes. It seems to them that life was
easier before: Scarecrow now worries too much; Tin Man suffers with every
being’s suffering, no matter how small they might be; and Lion is always
getting into fights, so he has to spend hours licking his wounds.
As they are speaking about how much
happier they were before they went to Oz, they see an old snail moving slowly
along the yellow-brick road.
Scene II:
The snail finally reaches the tree
where they are resting and tells them her story. She is tired of being so slow
and is heading to Oz to ask the wizard for speed, she wants to be as quick as
thunder.
Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion see
themselves reflected in Snail and all of a sudden they understand how crazy it
has been to set off on a journey to give away the gifts they so desperately had
longed for.
Characters’
Objectives: They
all want to learn how to live a happy life now that the element of suffering
has entered their lives.
Ending: They reach a satisfying
understanding: they should stop wishing for things they don’t have. Only that
will bring them happiness. They put their arms on their friends’ shoulders and
get on the yellow-brick road dancing and singing as they leave Oz behind.
